Asbestos Delays Cleanup in Utah

A burn site cleanup in Cedar City, Utah has been delayed due to asbestos. In December of 2008, the Five Buck Pizza and Bike Route retail locations in downtown Cedar City burned down. The cleanup has been a slow, ongoing process, which finally gathered steam a few weeks ago. Now, work has been halted because a small amount of asbestos has been found in the rubble.

Bittmenn said Bulloch Brothers Engineering, the owners of the property, are working on the asbestos removal, and plan to start removing the rest of the rubble as soon as possible.
There is apparently only a small amount of asbestos to be removed, but it needs to be taken care of by a licensed professional. The asbestos removal should not take much longer, and it has been reported that the property owners are "getting very close to resolving the asbestos issue."
Local business owners are either moving their businesses or waiting until the cleanup project has been completed before they re-open their doors.

The Bike Route store has relocated to another area because of the overly-long cleanup process. The Pastry Pub is waiting to re-open until after the cleanup project is finally complete. The Pastry Pub must wait to see if the wall has any outstanding damage from the fire.

With summer only months away, and big tourist draws like the Utah Shakespeare Festival to consider, it is hoped that the asbestos clean-up will not draw out the downtown rubble removal project.
